End of Term Arrangements

Dear Parents/Carers

I would like to inform you of the key arrangements as we approach Christmas:

As you know, I am leaving Falconer School as Headteacher with effect from the end of this term and taking up the permanent full-time headship at Batchwood School in January.

I have had the joy and privilege of leading Falconer School as its Headteacher for the past 5 ½ years, seeing it grow in standards, and reputation from ‘special measures’ to where it is now. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this School and cannot express how proud I am of our students and staff and the progress we have made together. We really did ‘Dream, Believe and Achieve’.

Life always presents interesting opportunities. As you know for the past 18 months I have also been the Headteacher at Batchwood School, which is different in that it has girls as well as boys and is the only one of its type in Hertfordshire. That school still needs a lot more input in terms of leadership. In an ideal world, I would have liked to continue the dual role of leading both schools, but unfortunately, it was not possible to do so for a number of reasons, which is a great shame, as I felt it had so many financial benefits to both schools as well as enhancing a number of opportunities for students and staff alike.

It is with a heavy heart that I had to make a decision. My reason for leaving has nothing to do with the students. I will miss them incredibly. They are a credit to this school and to themselves. At times, the thought of leaving is almost overwhelming. It is about principles and where the need is greatest. That is how I have been able to come to a decision. Quite simply; Falconer School has all the processes in place to continue to develop, Batchwood still needs more support and help. So 2019 will be an interesting challenge for me.

I urge you all to support Mr Paul Clair, who will take over in January as interim Headteacher. He has a great deal of experience in working in special schools, has a great reputation for getting on well with young people. He will provide a fresh leadership that this school deserves, and indeed demands.

Again, thank you for allowing me to lead Falconer. It is a very special, purposeful and kind school.
